Applus+ Laboratories: Drone CE marking testing process sharing, using Open Category drones as example

01/07/2024

Over the past few years, the drone industry has seen rapid growth and widespread adoption globally. Many drone manufacturers and suppliers seek to market their products internationally, and safety testing of drones has become a hot topic. For example, in the EU market, where demand is high, drone products must be CE certified and need to meet the basic safety and performance requirements of European regulations.

Applus+ Laboratories, as one of the first EU 2019/945 UAS Certification Bodies (NB0370), can carry out the testing and certification for open category drones, the testing, certification and operation for the specified category drones.

In this article, we will briefly introduce the testing process for CE marking for drones, using open category drone testing as an example.

Thanks to the accumulated expertise in electrical and electronics components evaluation, including avionics systems, as well as mechanical, acoustics and cybersecurity, Applus+ Laboratories is able to carry out every type of testing required for open category drones.

During the indoor testing phase, Applus+ Laboratories team test open category drones in laboratory conditions for maximum takeoff weight (MTOM) evaluation, maximum characteristic dimension, mechanical strength, UA interconnect system, mechanical shock, command and control (C2), noise, power, lighting, unique serial number, direct remote identification, geo-awareness and airspace limitations, etc.

During outdoor flight tests, Applus+ Laboratories conducts specialised tests under flight conditions around open category drones for maximum speed, maximum attainable height, safety and controllability, mechanical strength, crashworthiness, minimise injury to people, loss of command and control (C2) link recovery procedures, low battery recovery procedures, flight termination system, follow-me mode, low speed mode, automatic and control mode switching, direct remote identification, network remote identification, geo-awareness and airspace limitation features.
